You only need a little caulking to make a job look good, but usually you end up with more than you need and it gets all over. Try using a syringe filled with caulking - your results will be much improved. You won't have excess caulking all over because of the smaller hole in the syringe, and you can either clean up the syringe or just throw it into the garbage. If you use a dab of water on your finger when you spread the caulking out, you will end up with professional results.
