Deep dish edge and back dressing

Instead of cutting a bed edge at 90 degrees to the grass, cut it at a 45 degree slope and go down 6". This leaves enough room for 2" of bark mulch, which will not mix with the grass but will be held in place by the bed edge. You can also stand right on the edge and it will never collapse. When mowing, you can lay the the lawn mower over the edge and cut all the grass, thus eliminating the need for a grass trimmer.

Convert Sprinkler to Drip System for Garden

This system allows you to control exactly how much water will be dispensed, and the water never hits the blossoms of flowers. The conversion takes about 10 minutes. Replace the sprinkler head of your choice with a drip-watering emitter, plug one end of a piece of drip tubing into the emitter and lay the other end at the base of your plant. Hold the tube in place with a small rock or a 10-cent tube stake.

    Heads-up on Pop-up Sprinklers

Pop-up sprinkler heads are easily damaged and often get clogged with dirt and debris. Here's how to check and repair sprinkler heads that are worse for wear in less than an hour with a flat-blade screwdriver and pair of pliers. If a head is clogged, remove the center insert by turning it clockwise with the pliers. Inspect the openings, clean the small cone filter and check water flow by running it like a geyser before reassembling and checking the spray action. If it's no longer aimed properly or over-waters, be sure to readjust to avoid wasting water and causing moisture damage to your home. Puddles are caused by plant growth -- just trim to clear. If needed, reset area sprinkler patterns too. Check timers to see if you're over- or under-watering.

    Coffee Can Fertilizer

The coffee can is probably the world's most versatile device. Try this great use for the celebrated 1-pound coffee can. Be sure to save the plastic top -- it is the key to the success of this project. Place the top, upside down, on a piece of scrap wood and use an 8th-inch round steel dowel or a similar size piece of metal tubing to cut a series of holes into the soft plastic. The holes should be staggered and spaced at a distance equal to their diameter. Fill the can with fertilizer, bird seed or lawn seed, place the cover onto the can and begin spreading. You can even use your new-found spreader for bubble-bath powder.
