    No-Slip tape measure

    Friday, June 25, 2010, 5:05 PM [General]

When measuring pipe, the end of the typical steel tape measure will usually keep slipping off the end of the pipe being measured. You often waste time rehooking the tape onto the end of the pipe. Here's a simple solution. Bend the tang of the tape measure just a little so that it hooks onto the end of the pipe without slipping off.

    Grip, no slip

For removing old grips on golf clubs, use a box cutter to remove the old grip. Then, to ease installation of new grips, spray WD-40 into the tube of the new grip, slide it on and straighten it out. In minutes, the glue will be hard as nails. This is cheaper and faster than using golf grip solvent.

    Storing leftover paint

Your can of used paint, kept for touch-up jobs, can end up rock hard. Next time you open a fresh can of paint, use a small, common screwdriver to punch a couple of holes side by side into the trough in the rim where the lid fits onto the can. The holes should form a half-inch slot. Whenever you pour some paint, at the slot, the paint in the trough will drain into the can. Keep the can tilted a little by putting your screw driver under it, opposite the trough, so that the paint dribbles into it while you work. Also, set the lid on top of the can to reduce drying. At day's end, clean the trough by jamming two bits of rag into the trough and pushing them around the trough in opposite directions towards your drain slot. Every drop will drip back into the can. The trough will be clean as new. There will be an airtight seal when you tap on the lid with your rubber mallet.

    Avoid Toggle-Bolt Pinch

To hold a toggle bolt while tightening, use a plastic fork with a tine removed. Keep some slight tension on the fork by pulling outward against the head. This tip will keep the toggle from spinning inside the wall and keep your fingers from getting pinched as you finish the job.

    JD's Easy-to-Remove Trash Container

    Friday, June 25, 2010, 4:27 PM [General]

For easy removal of a trash bag from a trash can, leave the lid on a 33 gallon trash container, turn it upside down and cut the bottom out of it. Then, place the can on a hand cart, insert a trash bag, and secure the top of it with a bungee cord around the outside rim of the container. When the bag is full, don't pull it out of the container; just lift the container off of the bag and cart. Now all you have to do is lift the lid with the trash bag and dispose of it - either in the sidewalk dumpster or the back of a truck to haul to the dump. I used this idea to haul about 20 bags of leaves from my backyard and never once ripped a trash bag. You can use either a metal container or a plastic one.
