Your can of used paint, kept for touch-up jobs, can end up rock hard. Next time you open a fresh can of paint, use a small, common screwdriver to punch a couple of holes side by side into the trough in the rim where the lid fits onto the can. The holes should form a half-inch slot. Whenever you pour some paint, at the slot, the paint in the trough will drain into the can. Keep the can tilted a little by putting your screw driver under it, opposite the trough, so that the paint dribbles into it while you work. Also, set the lid on top of the can to reduce drying. At day's end, clean the trough by jamming two bits of rag into the trough and pushing them around the trough in opposite directions towards your drain slot. Every drop will drip back into the can. The trough will be clean as new. There will be an airtight seal when you tap on the lid with your rubber mallet.
